I started this blog because I wanted to chronicle our experiences in starting and running a family winery. I started this blog partially to take a jab at my husband who we affectionately call "Eyore" and whose half empty glass is in a way a complement to mine. I started this blog to share the joys and the heartbreaks of our lives in the most naive way possible. I didn't know what was coming and I am just now able to start it up again. I am hopeful that I can still do those things, write about the trials and tribulations of a small family business but that perhaps, just perhaps, it will also be my salve and my salvation.
On Sunday, March 27, 24 days after what would have been Jacob's 35th birthday some of our dearest friends and family gathered at San Simeon Cove and either watched from shore or donned wet suits to paddle out with his ashes. The surfers, real and one-timers, each took one of the 13 surfboards that were part of his collection and lined up on the beach for all to use. It was a moment that brought me peace, profound gratitude, profound sorrow and yes, joy. A word I could not have imagined using about anything surrounding the death of my son. However, the skies parted for the first time in almost two weeks and we were blessed with the most amazing sun-filled day in what has been a long wet winter. We celebrated. The sun. The flowers. The family. The friends. The green hills. The ocean. Jacob. How lucky were we......
